Much like the prophet Jonah, we all have a “Nineveh”—people God is calling us to reach out to in spite of their animosity toward us or toward Him. As our culture continues to rush headlong away from Judeo-Christian values, the church in the US is facing more hostility than ever before, and experiencing the truth of Jesus’ words in very tangible ways: “If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” (John 15:19)
Summer Seaquest offers many opportunities to answer God’s call to go to our “Ninevehs.” As we prayerfully dive into the Book of Jonah, He would have us open our ears and hearts to what He’s saying to us individually and collectively. Perhaps even the idea of holding a VBS is a Nineveh for you, whether it’s the inconvenience, the cost of time or money, or the risk of welcoming into your church walls children steeped in the world’s values. Maybe it’s a Nineveh for your church children who struggle with navigating the ridicule of peers who don’t share their Christian faith.
The Book of Jonah is a message for our time, and one God can use for great Kingdom effect in the hearts of your church—both children and adults. Seeing how God’s pursuing love and saving grace brought a transformation of such dramatic proportions as the redemption of the great city of Nineveh will grow your view of just how big, powerful, and merciful our God is. It can fill us with new courage, and even joy, in going to our Ninevehs with the message of God’s truth and His radical, amazing grace.
We hope you’ll sail with us for Summer Seaquest 2019 and take the Gospel in this compelling way to the children in your communities that so desperately need us to answer God’s call.
