When we pour ourselves into planning and conducting a VBS week, we want to know it has life-changing power. But sometimes the things that most drive churches in choosing a VBS program won’t bring that lasting change we desire and pray for. Years in the VBS world have shown us that the priorities which often rise to the top for many are: Is the theme exciting? Is the music good? Is it fun? Is it easy? Those aren’t bad things to want for our VBS’s. But are they great things? Are they the things that give heart-changing power to VBS?
So what does the Word—the Word that is the true authority for all of life—say?
“For the word of God is living and active…” (Heb. 4:12)
“…from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (II Tim 3:15-17)
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes…” (Romans 1:16)
“The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” (James 5:16)
Based on these verses, we know what makes VBS life-changing and worth spending ourselves to carry it out—giving kids the WORD, the powerful Word of God, and covering the week with prayer. It seems VBS would look more like this:
- Kids being taught the profound truths of the Word of God—they can take in and grasp so much!
- Kids memorizing the Word, and not just one verse for the week, but a passage of verses—they learn so fast!
- Kids hearing and learning the Gospel—what it is, what it means for them, what Bible verses teach it, and how to tell it themselves to others.
- Kids learning to serve and give to others.
- Adults boldly and faithfully praying for God to work!
When these are our priorities, VBS can be the pivotal week in a child’s life it should be, and it’s well worth spending ourselves for it.
At Reachout we seek to put highest priority on these things. Plus, our programs are fun, kids love our themes, and our music is filled with truth and depth. We pray for our churches, and encourage them to make prayer a priority. We’re not the easiest VBS out there, but we work hard to provide what you need to make your VBS go smoothly; and greater investment of time and effort–when done in faith and undergirded with prayer–brings greater results.
So don’t waste your VBS week! Make it count for eternity by prioritizing the things Scripture itself values most as you choose your VBS program.
Free Online Registration Tool
Many have asked us if we offer an online registration platform. We don’t, but we do have a great suggestion. Google Forms is easy to use, works great in keeping track of your data, and is completely free! All you need is a gmail account. You can post or email a link to the form you create, or have an iPad available at church that allows parents to register their kids on the spot.
